ONE

Can you call, email, or drop in at the agency at anytime if you have any questions?

Of course you can! It is important for the agent and the model to always have a good working relationship. It is also important to always have good communication too. If you’re ever looking to drop into an agency for a quick “check in” meeting, it’s usually a good idea to call in advance so the agent knows that you’re coming.

TWO

How much does a photo shoot cost?

This has always been a controversial question in the industry for many years as costs vary depending on the agency. Make sure to always do your research. Generally, photo shoots range from $250 - $1000. This will depend on the type of shoot, photographer and what is being offered in the shoot such as; hair-styling, make up artist, type of studio, shoot time-frame etc.

Are Modeling Courses Needed?

In short, the answer is no. However let’s look closer at the industry. Compared to the magnitude of the International Fashion Industry, the Canadian model industry is quite a bit smaller. Many times, for a model who has potential and wants to really “Make it”, they will be sent abroad to different countries such as; United States with New York and Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, Asia and so on. Spending money for modeling courses should always be a personal choice. If a model thinks that taking a course will give them a competitive edge, then go for it. Taking modeling courses are never frowned upon and are never forced.

Should I take a modelling course?

As explained in the previous question, you should never be forced to take a modeling course. Having said that, taking a course or having a coach/consultant to teach you about the industry is highly recommend because you are able to learn new things about the industry that you may not have learned without the classes. Investing in a coach/consultant can save you time and money in the long run because they are able to suggest the best ideas for you and lead you in the right direction. It always helps to have an “industry expert” on your side!

What does an Agent do?

Agents are also known as the “Middle Man” as they submit you for work within the industry while keeping you in track. An agent can unfortunately never guarantee you work, but they can definitely do their best to find you as many opportunities as possible. An agents job is to submit “the talent” to the client and also go over all the contracts and regulations relating to the client. This helps to ensure that you are getting the best opportunities possible as well as keeping you safe in the industry. If you hear of any agents guaranteeing work, BEWARE, it’s probably false information. Other SWEET TALK to watch out for:

“You are exactly what we are looking for”
”We are going to make you a star!”
”You will make a lot of money if you sign with us.”
”Sign right now, there’s nothing to think over.”
”You will have to pay $$$ to sign up”

Don’t let this totally scare you as there are many legitimately, good agents in the industry who treat models in their best interest. This is just a heads-up and a warning that there are some bad agents out there that could care less about their models. It’s all about them.

Can you say “NO” to a job or someone if you feel uncomfortable?

This may seem like a pretty straight forward question with an easy answer but you’d be surprised at how many people think that they cannot say “NO.” Most think that if they say no, they will hurt their chances for future and better opportunities. If you’re in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason, say no get out of it and move on to the next casting call, or modeling job. There will be plenty more good opportunities coming your way that will make you feel comfortable.

So the answer is YES, you can say No to any job or situation in the industry that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Are interviews important when it comes to signing with an agency?

Yes! It is always a very good idea to schedule an interview with an agency or agencies you are interested in. This gives you a chance to meet the agent, and for the agent to meet you. It’s just like going for a job interview.

What should I wear to an interview with an Agency?

Many times, agencies will specify what they would like you to wear. A standard request that seems to be more and more popular is a fitted tank top with fitted pants. This makes it easier for the agency to see your figure, and agents will more than likely ask you to come with minimal to no make up on. It’s all about natural beauty.

What question should I ask myself before getting into the modeling/fashion business?

One of the most important questions to always ask yourself before getting into the modeling/fashion industry is “WHY” do you want to get into it? Asking yourself this question will really put things into prospective and hopefully help you set goals on what you want to achieve. Getting started into any new industry can be very challenging and intimidating at times. This is why it’s always recommend to do your research and/or have a mentor to help guide you through the process.

If you are under the age of 18, do you need a parent or guardian to sign your modeling contract?

Yes! For the protection of the agency and the model, it is extremely important to have a parent or a guardian be aware and participate in the models growth of their career.

Even if you are over the age of 18, and still would like someone to come to a meeting with you, that is OK and totally acceptable. New environments can be scary sometimes. There are usually waiting rooms available for your friend or parent to wait in while you’re in the meeting with the agent.

When first getting into the industry, do I need to build a huge portfolio before shopping agencies?

The answer is no. In our professional opinion, it is always good to get some practice and to collaborate with other artists so you can gain experience. The agencies will then be able to see your potential. On the contrary, you can reach out to an agency with just a selfie and a couple full body shots. If they see the potential in you, they will be interested. Period!

Industry secret: make sure the photos that you do are “industry standard”. That way the agencies can use them to promote you. Best of both worlds.
